This wineglass-shaped drum is distinctive to Timor. It is played by the priest during traditional ceremonies. There is a face carving in the 'neck' of the drum. It is a museum-quality drum with very primitive aura. A very good complement to your home.</div>

The war shield of Nias, which vary little throughout the island, can be recognized by their distinctly elongated oblong form and markings. Carved of a single piece of wood, a raised roundel with tapered sides protrudes from the centre from which a raised spine runs vertically the entire length. The top of the shields feature cut-outs, to allow the warrior a glimpse of the enemy before him. Likewise, the extended finial below functions as a stand. Horizontal ropes of twisted rattan are inserted through holes on both sides to add strength and increase flexibility. On rare occasions they are carved with zoomorphic motifs such as the lizards.</div>

<span style="color: red;"><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Taka</b></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Origin: Ngada, West Central Flores, Indonesia</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Material: brass</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is <i>taka</i>, a pendant in double ax-head shape. The form is amazingly similar to the Sumba <i>marangga</i> but there does not seem to be an awareness in Flores that there is similar jewelry on the other island.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These <i>taka</i> pendant is typical Ngada pieces, used throughout the Bajawa area. Adat experts there asserted that the shape represents an ax. <i>Taka</i> are worn by men or women around the neck on a chain or suspended singly from a headband worn above the eyebrows. They are used as part of the bridewealth payments and can also be inherited from one's parents. The <i>taka</i> apparently have a certain sacred quality, for they may only be taken out of their special strongboxes into the daylight after a small animal such as a piglet has been sacrificed.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: red;"><b>Toraja rice barn panel</b></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Origin: Toraja, Sulawesi (Celebes), Indonesia<br />
Material: wood<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The name <span style="color: red;"><i>Toraja</i></span> refers to a number of ethnic group inhabiting the mountainous regions of southwestern and central Sulawesi, an Indonesian island formerly called Celebes. The word may be derived from <span style="color: red;"><i>To-ri-aja</i></span>, Men of the Mountain, a name given to them by the Buginese, one of the other ethnic groups inhabiting South Sulawesi. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The traditional house and the rice-barn are an expression of the esthetic feeling of the Toraja and of his craftmanship. Today, many houses and rice-barns are lavishly decorated with leaf patterns, scrolls, meanders, double spirals, sun-motifs, buffalo head and so on. Carved objects in Torajan houses and barns are an expression of the natural environment and are linked to the highest god in Torajan beliefs (Aluk Todolo). Most of the carved motifs on Toraja houses and granaries suggest fertility and prosperity, concepts that are closely related, if not identical, from the local viewpoint. House and rice-barns, the ends of their roofs upturned, look like proas. In fact, the Toraja themselves point out the resemblance of their dwellings to ships. </div>

Adu so bawa zihono, "image of a thousand faces", are the largest type of ancestors figures seen in South Nias and their name refers to the relief carvings of faces that invariably appear on the forked projections, <span style="color: red;"><i>daha</i></span>, of
these armless figures. These adu were made to alleviate misfortunes due to
sins. The enlarged sex organs of these adu symbolize the fertility of crops and
animals resulting from succesful headhunting, traditionally a social
responsibility of young males. If young men did not fulfill their duty as
warriors, misfortune might befall the community. Villagers would then respond
to the consequent disaster by commisioning adu buwa zihono sculptures.</div>

small and barren in the west, somewhat larger and more wooded in the east -
where the standard of living is low. On some of the islands famine occurs
regularly due to infertile soil and a shortage of rainwater.</span></div>

their challenging environment, the inhabitants of South East Mollucas have produced
works of art of impressive beauty and profound meaning. Consequently, the
ancestor statues of Leti and Tanimbar, as well as the jewelry and fabric of
Kisar and Tanimbar, have been highly desired by collectors for many years.</span></div>

the production of most of these objects ceased nearly a century ago. This

<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">In South East Mollucas islands, the boat represents a woman in which, after conception, new life can thrive. In essence the boat can be compared to the womb. In the Kai, Tanimbar, and Babar archipelagos, as well as on the islands of Luang, Sermata, Leti and Damar, the boat not only served as a means of transport; it was also considered an important model of society. The occupants of houses and villages saw themselves as a ship's crew, a
view that was expressed in various ways. </span></div>

<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The
form of this figure indicates the Sun God</span><span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">, the legendary creator ancestor whose union with the earth goddess produces fertility. It was carved in either Babar or Leti
because they display several characteristic aspect of South East Mollucan iconography. The heavenly deity, the Sun God, was portrayed as a male figure (although the gender is not specially emphasized), often sitting in a boat or a boat-shaped construction which usually had a beautifully worked stern. </span><span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The ancestor face is
dominated by extraordinary large noses, set just below the downward-angled
eyes, which reach almost to the chin. The eyes were inlaid with shell.
Ornaments indicating high status are carved on the figure and include a pair of
dangling earrings, a headdress with a horizontal band, a comb like extension on
the top, and a pair of decorative leg bands below the knees. The ancestor' back
rest against carved post that rise high above the figure and that terminate in
rounded form. Similarly shaped post extend from the back of the altar, carved with
open scroll work like that of the crescent boat form. The woodwork around the
ancestor and its offering cups is extensively carved with spiral forms and four
petaled flowers. </span><span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Offerings are placed before the altar during rituals to ensure human and agricultural productivity. The spiral form is undoubtedly the most dominant decorative motif and is found on practically all statues in the region. Decorations often also include representations of the founding ancestors, either in the shape of a human or an animal figure. In the latter case, the animal is often a cock, a dog or a fish-like creature. </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The
whole statue was mounted on a post about three meters in height and often
stood on a stone base located at the "stern" or east end of the village
ritual center. It was thought that earthly life was dependent on the
cosmic marriage between the heavenly deity and the earth goddess, a
dependence relationship that was expressed in the depiction of the male
deity as a helmsman. The combination of helmsman and sun manifests itself also in the orientation of a boat during construction: the stern post must be directed eastwards, the direction of the rising sun. Moreover, divine combination of helmsman and sun is traditionally expressed in the decorative motifs on the stern board and at the top of the stern post. </span></div>

These statues were made to be placed in a special room in houses, yards and osalis (the houses of worships).</span><br />
<span class="searchable-content">Adu Zatuas was made as male statues, worshiped as replacements for parents whom already passed away. <div style="text-align: justify;">
Throughout the islands of Maluku Tenggara in eastern Indonesia, ancestor
images indicated important links between the living and the dead. Small
seated ancestor figures depicted deceased family members and were kept
and used within the home. The present image is likely from Leti Island,
where such images were called <span style="color: red;">yene.<b> </b></span>Each depicted a specific recently
deceased individual and served as a vessel in which his or her spirit
resided temporarily before departing for the land of the dead and to
which it periodically returned to receive offerings or be consulted
about important matters. On Leti, the pose of yene indicated the gender
and status of the deceased. Male ancestors were shown seated with the
legs drawn in to the body, and female ancestors were depicted with the
legs crossed.</div>

The
fertility statue 'upuinai' is a deity statue of the earth/moon.
Fertility statues are female statues in the form of a "tree of life" and
than carved in such a way until it has an anthropomorphic form, where
the whole surface is covered by carvings of the symbol of fertility (spiral). The spiral form is undoubtedly the most dominant decorative motive and is found on practically all statues in the region.
Both arms stretched to the left and right and the tips of her fingers
are flames of fire. Included in this classification are also the
fertility carvings. Very fine and beautiful spiral carvings carved on a
flat wooden surface.<br />
<br />
This item is very rare, even it is very likely that there is only few of this in Indonesia. We only have one with high quality such as this. </div>

Water buffalo play a significant role in the lives of the Sa’dan Toraja
people. Standards of wealth, markers of prestige, and symbols of male virility,
water buffalo images are common decorative themes on traditional houses. The <span style="color: red;"><b><i>pa’tedong</i></b></span>
(essence of water buffalo) abstract design is one of the most common
multicolored non-representational images etched into exterior house panels.
The wooden carved water buffalo head embellished with real horns commonly
adorns the face of a large traditional house. Family status and prestige in the
Toraja highlands of South Sulawesi, Indonesia is commonly expressed by the
number of water buffalo slaughtered at large funerals. The horns of these sacrificial
animals are subsequently posed on the front house pillar as graphic expressions
of significant family wealth and social standing.<br />
The wooden door depicted here shows a perfectly configured water buffalo
with great arching horns. Local villagers assess particular animals on the basis
of size, configuration of horns, color and body type.<br />
The most valuable animals are the grey and white piebald <span style="color: red;"><b><i>bonga</i></b></span> which
can sometimes be worth as much as a used automobile. The image on the door beckons
residents and guests to enter the house of a family, which has the power and
wealth to stage great funerals, then subsequently distribute large quantities
of meat to assembled mourners, and which plays an important role in community
affairs.<br />
<br />
A mid-size example probably used as a house or granary window, but could have been a shrine vault window, as well. The image of a buffalo head, as seen on this example, signified the high rank and wealth of the respected villager. The buffalo is an auspicious motif in Toraja culture, and the staff between the horn is a symbol of defense or protection for the dwelling.</div>

<b>Đông Sơn drums</b> (also called <b>Heger Type I drums</b>) are bronze drums fabricated by the <b><span style="color: red;">Dong Son culture,</span></b><span style="color: red;"></span> in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam. The drums are one of the culture's finest examples of metalworking.</div>
<div style="line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0.5em; text-align: justify;">
The drums, cast in bronze using the lost wax method, are up to a 40 centimeter in height and weigh up to 10 kg. Dong Son drums were apparently both musical instruments and cult objects. They are decorated with geometric patterns, scenes of daily life and war, animals and birds, and boats. The latter alludes to the importance of trade to the culture in which they were made, and the drums themselves became objects of trade and heirlooms.</div>

This tavu altar is shaped like a human with gracefully extended arms and at
the same time it is decorated with abstract spiral motifs. The arms were
carved separately and added. Very few examples still exist today and
are displayed only in a handful of European museums (example: http://masterpieces.asemus.museum/masterpiece/detail.nhn?objectId=11849).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This domestic altar, which evoked the body of an ancestor, supported one
roof beam of the house. The tavu is a domestic altar dedicated to
ancestors. It was placed opposite the front door. The wealth and
prestigious assets passed down through a family were also included on
the tavu. Certain animals may recall the deeds of the dwelling's
founders. On a shelf above the altar lay the skulls of venerated
ancestors, their first two vertebrae, and often their effigies. The tavu
was an integral part of the notion of lineage and sacred power. It was a
clear link between past and present, endowed with special spiritual
power, a heritage of the "masters of the house". It was here that
prayers and sacrifices were offered to encourage fertility in the
people and in the harvest; to ensure success in fishing or headhunting
expeditions; and to uphold the union between ancestors and their
descendants.</div>

The fertility statue "upuinai' is a deity statue of the earth/moon. Fertility statues are female statues in the form of a "tree of life" and than carved in such a way until it has an anthropomorphic form, where the whole surface is covered by carvings of the symbol of fertility. Both arms stretched to the left and right and the tips of her fingers are flames of fire. Included in this classification are also the fertility carvings. Very fine and beautiful spiral carvings carved on a flat wooden surface.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A deity statue which has an anthropomorphic form, being in a sitting position and the knees are bent reaching his chest and both arms resting on the knees.
As with all Leti male ancestors, it squats on its pillar with arms
clasped around its knees. This statue is placed on a carved wooden pole and represents one of the first leaders of a clan or community. Its ornate earrings and headdress indicate its
high rank, and possibly its identity. The motifs carved on the plinth
and ear lobes represent ancestors’ names or events in the history of the
clan that once owned the statue.<br />
On the top of the pole, extended to the left and right, are two wings (or a boat symbol). There are two wings, one bigger than the other, probably this symbolizes a vertical-down relationship to dere and luli (the founding fathers) and a vertical-up relationship with "it matromna" (the creator of the universe). The wings wriggles like flames of fire (symbol of divine power). This statue is a personification of the sun god (Upulera). Upulera statues are always on poles because of it's high status.<br />
Storytellers used these motifs to help
them memorize their clan stories. The motifs may have been purely
decorative, but if they were of a special type called <span style="color: red;"><b>rou</b></span>, they would
have been the exclusive property of the clan. Only that clan could
understand the meaning of these rou motifs.</div>
